If a student is unable to hear your voice during a Zoom class, here are step-by-step troubleshooting steps to help you quickly identify and resolve the issue:
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
1. Check if You’re Muted
Look at the microphone icon on the bottom-left of the Zoom window.
If it has a red slash (🔇), click it to unmute yourself.
2. Ensure the Right Microphone is Selected
Click the arrow (˄) next to the Mute/Unmute button.
Under “Select a Microphone”, choose your active microphone.
Try different options if you’re unsure (e.g., "Internal Microphone", "USB Microphone", etc.).
3. Test Microphone in Zoom Settings
Click the arrow (˄) next to the mic icon → “Audio Settings”.
Under Microphone, speak and check if the input bar moves.
Click “Test Mic” to record and play back your voice.
If you can’t hear it, Zoom isn’t receiving your audio.
4. Check System Sound Settings (Windows/Mac)
Windows: Go to Settings → System → Sound.
Under Input, ensure the correct microphone is selected and working.
Mac: Go to System Preferences → Sound → Input.
Check if the correct mic is selected and input levels are showing.
5. Close Other Apps Using Microphone
Make sure apps like Skype, Google Meet, or MS Teams are not using the mic in the background, which can block Zoom access.
6. Restart Zoom
Close Zoom completely and reopen it.
Join the meeting again and check your mic.
7. Update Zoom
Outdated versions can cause bugs.
Go to Zoom desktop app → Profile icon (top-right) → Check for Updates.
8. Reboot Your Computer
Sometimes a simple restart fixes hardware connection issues.
9. Try an External Microphone or Headset
If your internal mic isn’t working, try plugging in an external headset or microphone.
Still Not Working?
You can also try hosting a test meeting at https://zoom.us/test to check both mic and speaker.
